Game Idea Research

For this part of the project I am going to delve deeper into my game ideas and see exactly what I can take forward with me to become a final realised working game. After getting feedback on my four game ideas and thinking about what kind of game I want to create, I have decided to go forward with my first idea of an 3D endless running game. I feel through the game brainstorm phase this was my strongest idea and I had the most ideas for different types of endless running game. I also think these kinds of game reach a wide audience and a lot of people appreciate them. As I stated in my last blog post I have two main ideas for this type of game.

1. A running game in which your character collects beers and it gets harder to control them the drunker they get. The beers can give extra points but means the the character is harder to move.

2. A running game that you run through mirrors and when you do the mirror changes some aspect of the scenery in the game or the direction in which the main character is running. These different mirrors can make the game harder or easier depending on the random mirror you run through.

Both games are similar in the sense that they are endless running games and the longer you are running the more points you will receive. Time = points. They both have obstacles that make the game more difficult or change the flow of the game. The controls of the players will be with the arrow keys. If this game is made for iPhone or tablet there would be a swipe feature.

Moving on to the different mechanics in the game (and thanks to Kyle Wright for the heads up on this game mechanics site). I would be looking at inputting a swerving mechanics feature. With all endless runner games I feel this is the key component of a successful 3D endless runner. However I will also be looking at a turning mechanics feature and seeing which mechanic will suit the game I want to create. A 3D game with a turning mechanic might prove too difficult for the game I want to create and a swerving mechanic might suit better. An interesting mechanic to look at would be the rising and falling mechanic. I feel this could fit both of my game ideas for this 3D endless runner and give the inclusion of gravity is an interesting added feature.

When researching I came across this site which gave a pretty fantastic breakdown on how to create a 3D endless running game with tips and tricks for people starting. It will be a helpful guide when creating my game and a useful resource to guide me. Remembering to set up the game for a few seconds is key and also be sure to reward your player with some type of 'Wow' moment. I will be referring to this post as I create and develop my game.

  1. Oh my God :) Wow , I love the first running idea, it is hilarious, when I read it I started laughing straight away, running game with collecting beers :) It is just brilliant. So will it be the game for adults only ? I hope to play your Game at the end of the semester , although I do not really play games and I have to say I do not have that much interest in playing games simply due to lack of time, If it is running for beers I will certainly play one. What if you make it a bit more broad , like collecting different drinks if you are upgrading levels, but so far I think It is one of the most unusual idea I came across. So hope you are doing well with Unity tutorials and wish you all the best and hope to play your Game:)

  2. Hey Hun

Love the first idea for the runner definitely some real world applications there.

I thought the idea of the player finding it harder to control their character as they collect more beer a unique and interesting concept that is both funny to see and entertaining to play. I would love to see how you implement the increasing difficulty of someone trying to control their character.
I was also thinking a great way to improve on this would be to have like different types of drinks like shots for bonus points or cocktails for score multipliers because their a mixture of drinks.
I was also wondering how exactly would a game over be encountered such as being chased and caught by a bouncer after bumping into a few customers or falling over a beer spillage as potential obstacles for your obstacles and maybe even smashing straight into a waiter or waitress

  3. Hey there,
I love the game Idea you have going on the 1st idea especially, sounds like a normal night out in Dublin after the clubs trying to get you bus home.. apart from that It would be a fab game, can add drink upgrades further you go as well as obstacles along the players way.
I really like the mirror game idea too.. almost like hopping through alternative universes like Rick and Morty, a different scene or challenge per mirror sounds so cool, love the ideas!

  4. Hey Kevin,
Firstly, I really enjoy reading your blog and browsing through it. I agree with you, an endless 3D running game does reach a wide range of audience, that's one of the reasons I picked an endless 3d running game. Have you considered your player being chased by like a security guard or like a police? I fell like that would be really cool to apply to your type of game. I hope all the unity tutorials are going well for you and I cannot wait to play your game. As it's a drinking game and I love my drink!
    Alex.

  5. Hi Kevin I really like your ideas for your game! I think it sounds so cool the idea of running through mirrors and having the scenery change each time. I have never heard of anything like that and I think it would come out very nice! I really like the idea of an endless runner game as I loved temple run growing up.

  6. Heya Kevin,

Loving the idea of an endless runner game, they're a simple but addictive game as you're trying to reach a high score in some way. I am so interested in the idea of when the player collects 'beer' as a reward it can also affect their controls of the character. How will you put this into effect if you choose that idea? Something that could be cool for your game is if you could add a darkness feature on the screen in your game, when the player gets more 'drunk' it could make it funny to witness the character slowly becoming blackout...literally.

Best of luck Kevin, excited to see the results hun xoxo

  7. Hello Kevin, That first idea made me laugh ahah it sounds goofy but is generally a very unique idea in terms of a game design the more they run the drunker they get sounds interesting and im more intrigued to know how you would go about the whole thing. Would you make the players vision more blurry as the game goes on? would you possibly add an item the players can pick up that might sober the character up and make it easier for the player to keep running but make it a challenge to get? This is a unique idea overall and I genuinely look forward to seeing how it turns out because I feel it will be a funny and also competitive kind of experience wanting to keep going and not fail the level. Best of luck throughout the whole development and I hope to play this game at some point when it is completed. :)
