Game Design

"Games are a form of art" (Ian Schriber). An Interesting description on 'What is a game?' It seems there is many ways to describe a game with some descriptions being built upon from previous answers. All holding the same ideas and roots when it comes to explaining exactly what a game is. It is clear the use of proper vocabulary while being critical over a game is key in the development and understanding of games, however that exact universal jargon and vocabulary might still be a bit in the distant future for the time being.

From the readings they all had a collective view on the importance on having conflict in gaming. Conflict is what keeps games interesting. It is what keeps the consumer coming back for more. Another importance is the advantage of having a versatile workforce when when game producing. Equality in the workforce when it comes to gender, race, nationality and social status can also be key components when creating a game and in the brainstorming production phase. Different types of people will lead to more ideas and better brainstorming sessions. Getting information and generating ideas from different people with an array of different lifestyles is essential to a successful output.

This brainstorming technique dating back to the 1930s is an essential part of gaming pre production. As much as redevelopment sequels can be a successful part of game design it is important for companies to create new IP's (Intellectual Properties) in order to gain new consumers to discover their games and create fresh relationships.

A changing atmosphere can generate better ideas for gaming. Being stagnant when trying to brainstorm and discover ideas can leave the creator uninspired and repetitive when creating. Like the importance of a versatile workforce, you must also be active in looking at the world around you for ideas and inspiration. Through reading and discovering of new information, ideas are formed and your best work can be created.

Scamper was an interesting read of game creation. Giving 7 core principles for development and generating of ideas. Substitute, combine, adapt, modify, put, eliminate and reverse are the examples given to help with idea generating. These techniques for game development give proven results and are beneficial to those with less experience in certain genres of gaming and game development.

  1. Hi Kevin!
I like the quote of Ian Schriber about what the game is- It is definitely a form of art. Like you said it's many ways to describe game design and I actually am very surprised that there is no proper vocabulary for that.
I completely agree with you that changing the atmosphere is good for getting new ideas and inspirations.

There were a lot of important things covered in this task, and game design in general is a huge topic to talk about and cover fully. There is so much to learn and talk about.
