Games GDD

 "Different teams in game development have different needs for documentation" (Nacke, 2014). Following on from the vision statement it is becoming more clear the need for a gaming vocabulary. Learning about the Game Design Document is both clear and confusing as for every bit of information it gives you to include it also states how it is not needed or important in the same sentence. One thing is clear it, it can be used as a communication piece between you the designer and your team. It also reinforces the idea of not jumping straight into the developing of your game and that this brainstorm and communication is key to a well developed game. This document can grow with the development of your game meaning it is not set in stone but still a good framework and foundation for the creation of your game.

With the different contradicting information for the Game Design Document there is some clear information to include if you and your team are going to create the document and that is;

1. Keep it short - The days of having page after page of the same information is gone. It is better to have a short well written document about your game.

2. Keep it clear and concise. Use plain english and clear terminology when creating your document.

3. Use images - Using images can help get across your vision better when explaining the mechanics and graphics to your team.

4. Do not repeat yourself - redundant information is just going to elongate your document. Say what you want to say once.

When creating a Game Design Document, it can be split into headings and sections in an order to keep the document clear and the information easily obtained. Ensure an index is included for further clarity and areas of information. Headings that can be included in the document are;

1. Summary

2. Gameplay

3.Technical

4.Level Design

5.Development

6.Graphics

7.Sound/Music

8.Schedule

As stated before, all design documents are different and different headings and information can be used depending on the game being created. Some of the key information will differ from game to game.
